Plan Pregnancies Well With Astrology: Avoid 'Kaala Sarpa Dosha' for the Baby

I like to mix and match both Vedic and Western systems of astrology to get a more accurate prediction without relying only on one system while condemning the other. The two systems are like two ends of the same stick. So let us take a look at an important concept in Vedic astrology; Kaala Sarpa Dosha (KSD)

It means ‘Black Snake Affliction’ in Sanskrit. It occurs when the 7 main solar objects (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus,  Mars,  Jupiter &  Saturn) excluding outer planets, converge on one side of the Lunar Nodal axis leaving the other side vacant or occupied only by outer planets. The nodes of the moon are like likened to a snake in Vedic astrology where the North Node (Rahu) is the head of the snake and the South Node (Ketu) is the tail of the snake.  It is symbolically believed that the snake has ‘swallowed’ the planets when KSD manifests. A nativity that takes place when the sky is such is said to be afflicted with KSD.

KSD is capable of giving an eccentric character to the natal chart and the native. ‘Imbalance’ will be a cross cutting theme in the person’s life. The person is usually subject to a great rise or great fall or both within his/her lifetime; Rags to Riches or Riches to Rags (if other chart factors permit). The cosmic energy affecting the native since birth is most likely to swap drastically around the age of 33. But if chart factors do not support this radical shift, then the native is likely stay unbalanced (and therefore unhappy) throughout life.  About 50% of components in his or her life will be empty or unsuccessful even though the other 50% may look good on the surface.

Take an example.

A man afflicted with KSD was born in a poor village in a poor country. He grew up weathering harsh childhood conditions. As a young man, he started a mediocre job as a teacher. Then he was picked up by a prominent charismatic Politician in the area and was offered an administrative staff position in the party. He rose steadily within the ranks of the party as he won the heart of his master.

The party grew and the politician was eventually elected into power. An ultra fancy top government job was offered to this man on a platter by his master politician. He was 33 years old when this windfall happened. His fortunes and lifestyle catapulted and sky rocketed to stunning heights. He was no longer recognizable as the lowly teacher that he used to be.  He had a grand ride for the next 6 years in the lap of extreme luxuries; there was no dearth of first class air travel and super luxury hotel stays.

But then came the big turn of trend. The politician died unexpectedly and it marked the beginning of the end for this man. However, he managed to stretch his lifestyle and status quo for a further period of 9 years with the help of the leader-less political party which was ailing but alive.  The bankrupt political party was eventually dissolved and disbanded. He had nowhere to go, nothing to fall back on. He ended up becoming more or less a house-husband to his working wife, in another country. Currently, he has no claims to fame and has no feathers in his own hat.

Noteworthy is the fact that even during the time of his great power and grandeur, he had no spouse (she was abroad), he had no regular abode to call home and he never had any children. It was a classic example of a greatly unbalanced life.

Internal psychological imbalances brought about by the KSD, creates distress and disharmony for the native, even if he or she may appear to be doing-all-right outwardly.

Vedic Astrology prescribes various remedies in the form of ‘Poojas’,  ‘Chanting of Mantras’ and other rituals to reduce bad effects of KSD. It is fine if people want to try those. But let us look at how to prevent the situation for our unborn babies by scanning the sky before planning a conception or a cesarean birth.

We are currently in a season prone to KSD which started on 18 September 2017. It will last until 18 January 2018. During this season all 7 planets will be hemmed on one side of the nodal axis thereby giving rise KSD, EXCEPT when the moon transits the empty side of the axis for two weeks, each month, within the season.  Such two-week windows DO NOT have KSD; I will call them safe periods within the season. In other words, 2 week periods of safe and unsafe alternate during the season.

Babies taking birth during safety windows will not be afflicted with KSD while those taking birth during the KSD season outside safety windows will be afflicted. Any other date outside the KSD season is completely safe. Those who are currently pregnant or looking to conceive any time soon may attempt to deliver their babies during safety windows if they so wish.

In any given decade, at least 7 years (not consecutive) are likely have a KSD season each lasting for a period of 2 to 4 months during the year. In the year 2016,  the season lasted from 05 September to 26 December. In the year 1972 there was no KSD season. In the year 1973 the season lasted from 05 March to 03 June. You may write to me if you would like to know whether your birth chart has KSD.

See the table below for current and upcoming KSD seasons and accompanying safety windows. Please note exact dates and times may vary according to your time zone.

26 February 2020 to 24 May 2020
11 January 2021 to 19 March2021
30 December 2021 to 22 April 2022

Note that the KSD seasons occurring in the first half of the next decade (i.e. 2020 to 2025) will be far more severe than normal KSD. It is because even the 3 outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, will be hemmed between the nodes on one side along with the 7 major bodies during those seasons.

Here is a quick guide to those looking to conceive babies accordingly.
The human gestation or pregnancy duration is 40 weeks (280 days) from the last menstrual period (LMP). That is approximately 9 months and 10 days going by the lay calendar. Sexual intercourse at approximately the 2 week mark AFTER the last menstrual period (Ovulation time) has the potency to create a baby.
Planned cesarean section births take place earlier than the 40th week. i.e. around the 36-38th week. Even natural births have a higher probability of occurring around the 38th week rather than the 40th when it is the second or subsequent baby. We need to also bear in mind that there could be cases of pre-mature live births taking place any time after the 30th week of pregnancy.

Now we can work backwards and figure out the best time to conceive a baby avoiding KSD seasons. Those of you who are already pregnant need not despair if you are planning on cesarean. You could simply schedule a date within the safety window in consultation with your Doctor. Those of you planning a natural birth and have an Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) within the KSD season, may take solace in the idea that the baby will be like no other, as he or she will be capable of great heights of achievement at some point in their lives.

If your own birth chart has KSD and you are under the age of 33, know that there is a very high probability of a major turn of winds when you reach that age. A reading of your natal chart can shed more light on how the changes might play out.
