Plan Pregnancies Well With Astrology: Avoid 'Kaala Sarpa Dosha' for the Baby

I like to mix and match both Vedic and Western systems of astrology to get a more accurate prediction without relying only on one system while condemning the other. The two systems are like two ends of the same stick. So let us take a look at an important concept in Vedic astrology; Kaala Sarpa Dosha (KSD)

It means ‘Black Snake Affliction’ in Sanskrit. It occurs when the 7 main solar objects (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus,  Mars,  Jupiter &  Saturn) excluding outer planets, converge on one side of the Lunar Nodal axis leaving the other side vacant or occupied only by outer planets. The nodes of the moon are like likened to a snake in Vedic astrology where the North Node (Rahu) is the head of the snake and the South Node (Ketu) is the tail of the snake.  It is symbolically believed that the snake has ‘swallowed’ the planets when KSD manifests. A nativity that takes place when the sky is such is said to be afflicted with KSD.

KSD is capable of giving an eccentric character to the natal chart and the native. ‘Imbalance’ will be a cross cutting theme in the person’s life. The person is usually subject to a great rise or great fall or both within his/her lifetime; Rags to Riches or Riches to Rags (if other chart factors permit). The cosmic energy affecting the native since birth is most likely to swap drastically around the age of 33. But if chart factors do not support this radical shift, then the native is likely stay unbalanced (and therefore unhappy) throughout life.  About 50% of components in his or her life will be empty or unsuccessful even though the other 50% may look good on the surface.

Take an example.

A man afflicted with KSD was born in a poor village in a poor country. He grew up weathering harsh childhood conditions. As a young man, he started a mediocre job as a teacher. Then he was picked up by a prominent charismatic Politician in the area and was offered an administrative staff position in the party. He rose steadily within the ranks of the party as he won the heart of his master.

The party grew and the politician was eventually elected into power. An ultra fancy top government job was offered to this man on a platter by his master politician. He was 33 years old when this windfall happened. His fortunes and lifestyle catapulted and sky rocketed to stunning heights. He was no longer recognizable as the lowly teacher that he used to be.  He had a grand ride for the next 6 years in the lap of extreme luxuries; there was no dearth of first class air travel and super luxury hotel stays.

But then came the big turn of trend. The politician died unexpectedly and it marked the beginning of the end for this man. However, he managed to stretch his lifestyle and status quo for a further period of 9 years with the help of the leader-less political party which was ailing but alive.  The bankrupt political party was eventually dissolved and disbanded. He had nowhere to go, nothing to fall back on. He ended up becoming more or less a house-husband to his working wife, in another country. Currently, he has no claims to fame and has no feathers in his own hat.

Noteworthy is the fact that even during the time of his great power and grandeur, he had no spouse (she was abroad), he had no regular abode to call home and he never had any children. It was a classic example of a greatly unbalanced life.

Internal psychological imbalances brought about by the KSD, creates distress and disharmony for the native, even if he or she may appear to be doing-all-right outwardly.

Vedic Astrology prescribes various remedies in the form of ‘Poojas’,  ‘Chanting of Mantras’ and other rituals to reduce bad effects of KSD. It is fine if people want to try those. But let us look at how to prevent the situation for our unborn babies by scanning the sky before planning a conception or a cesarean birth.

We are currently in a season prone to KSD which started on 18 September 2017. It will last until 18 January 2018. During this season all 7 planets will be hemmed on one side of the nodal axis thereby giving rise KSD, EXCEPT when the moon transits the empty side of the axis for two weeks, each month, within the season.  Such two-week windows DO NOT have KSD; I will call them safe periods within the season. In other words, 2 week periods of safe and unsafe alternate during the season.

Babies taking birth during safety windows will not be afflicted with KSD while those taking birth during the KSD season outside safety windows will be afflicted. Any other date outside the KSD season is completely safe. Those who are currently pregnant or looking to conceive any time soon may attempt to deliver their babies during safety windows if they so wish.

In any given decade, at least 7 years (not consecutive) are likely have a KSD season each lasting for a period of 2 to 4 months during the year. In the year 2016,  the season lasted from 05 September to 26 December. In the year 1972 there was no KSD season. In the year 1973 the season lasted from 05 March to 03 June. You may write to me if you would like to know whether your birth chart has KSD.

See the table below for current and upcoming KSD seasons and accompanying safety windows. Please note exact dates and times may vary according to your time zone.

KSD Prone Season of the year
Safety Windows Within Season
18 September 2017 to 18 January 2018
02 Oct 2017 – 14 Oct 2017

29 Oct 2017 – 10 Nov 2017

25 Nov 2017 – 07 Dec 2017

        22 Dec 2017 – 03 Jan 2018

11 August 2018 to 20 September 2018
24 Aug 2018 – 6 Sep 2018

30 July 2019 to  06 October 2019
To be provided on request
26 February 2020 to 24 May 2020
11 January 2021 to 19 March2021
30 December 2021 to 22 April 2022

Note that the KSD seasons occurring in the first half of the next decade (i.e. 2020 to 2025) will be far more severe than normal KSD. It is because even the 3 outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, will be hemmed between the nodes on one side along with the 7 major bodies during those seasons.

Here is a quick guide to those looking to conceive babies accordingly.
The human gestation or pregnancy duration is 40 weeks (280 days) from the last menstrual period (LMP). That is approximately 9 months and 10 days going by the lay calendar. Sexual intercourse at approximately the 2 week mark AFTER the last menstrual period (Ovulation time) has the potency to create a baby.
Planned cesarean section births take place earlier than the 40th week. i.e. around the 36-38th week. Even natural births have a higher probability of occurring around the 38th week rather than the 40th when it is the second or subsequent baby. We need to also bear in mind that there could be cases of pre-mature live births taking place any time after the 30th week of pregnancy.

Now we can work backwards and figure out the best time to conceive a baby avoiding KSD seasons. Those of you who are already pregnant need not despair if you are planning on cesarean. You could simply schedule a date within the safety window in consultation with your Doctor. Those of you planning a natural birth and have an Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) within the KSD season, may take solace in the idea that the baby will be like no other, as he or she will be capable of great heights of achievement at some point in their lives.

If your own birth chart has KSD and you are under the age of 33, know that there is a very high probability of a major turn of winds when you reach that age. A reading of your natal chart can shed more light on how the changes might play out.

Pluto is Great Because he is in a Class by Himself

When Pluto was discovered about a century ago there was much excitement about it.  People thought it was the greatest planet being the slowest, furthest, latest planet in the solar system. Some astrologers built great theories of evolutionary astrology centered on Pluto. He was labeled the ‘Lord of the Underworld’ in western astrology and ‘Yama Raj’ (meaning the same thing) in Vedic astrology.

However, at the turn of the millennium, a second body, Eris, was discovered within the region of Pluto. This created much confusion and debates about Pluto’s status. Various tags have been slapped on Pluto since then; Minor planet, Dwarf planet, TNO etc.  The debate still goes on and is not likely to end in our lifetime.

Here is why. Pluto is UN-CLASSIFIABLE.  You cannot lump him in with any other group as he is one of a kind. He does not neatly fit into any criteria of classification.

Pluto has following characteristics which sets him apart from others.

1.       Pluto is not alone, it has a smaller twin; Charon
It is also called a planetary binary system. No other major body in our solar system has a twin though many have moons. A moon is a satellite body that orbits a planet.  On the contrary a binary body dances around in tandem with another body with neither orbiting the other. They both orbit a moving spot located in the empty space between them. Pluto is paired with Charon in such a manner. So the problem: Pluto seems to have a moon but it is not a moon!

2.        Pluto crosses Neptune’s Orbit
Pluto’s orbit is not always beyond that of Neptune. Once in every 248 years he crosses into Neptune’s orbit for a stay of 20 years. During this period Pluto becomes the 8th body in the solar system before Neptune. So the problem: Pluto seems to be 9th planet but it is sometimes 8th!

3.       Pluto has not cleared its neighborhood space
This was the pivotal criteria which caused Pluto to be demoted.  Pluto hangs out among a lot of planetary dust and debris in a disk beyond Neptune; the kuiper belt. But then some argued that no other planet has cleared its neighborhood completely either; if they did there would be no nomadic-visitor-like comets and centaurs ping-ponging between major planets.  So the problem: Pluto is a planet but it is not!

4.       Pluto is trying to get into inner realms of the solar system
Most Comets and asteroids are believed to have originated somewhere in the Kuiper belt where Pluto is. Asteroid Ceres is believed to have originated in the Kuiper belt as she appears to be made of same stuff as Pluto. It then perhaps means that objects in the kuiper belt are fringe dwellers of our solar system who are constantly trying to get in to the inner realms. By that premise, asteroid Ceres and Centaurs are those who have succeeded in that quest of getting in. This could explain why Pluto periodically intrudes into Neptune’s orbit. So the problem: Pluto has his own place-in-the-sun but it could also be a potential invader; the greatest cosmic invader!

5.       Pluto could be an ejected/disowned moon of Neptune
All major outer planets are giant gaseous bodies whereas their moons are much smaller rocky, icy bodies. Neptune is a large gaseous body and Pluto is a tiny icy body right orbiting close to each other. Pluto may have been a moon/satellite of Neptune which got propelled further due to gravitational tugs called ‘perturbations’. So the problem: Pluto is a disowned moon; maybe may not!

If we even try to define Pluto we could only come up with ‘Un-definable’.  There is no other object like it. He is in a class by himself. He is a kind of a divine maverick here to tell us earth dwellers something unique. Therefore, my vote goes to Pluto as the greatest object of all. His influence in astrology should never be undermined but rather be enthroned as central.

Western (Tropical) Aspects vs. Vedic (Sidereal) Aspects in Astrology

Western astrology recognizes conjunction, trine, sextile, square, opposition and quincunx as main aspects and assigns levels of strength to them. Conjunctions are relatively strongest while sextiles are weakest irrespective of the planet involved in forming the aspect.

However, in Vedic astrology only certain aspects are taken in to consideration for certain planets (besides conjunctions and oppositions that work for all planets). They are called \'special aspects\'.

Special aspects are cast by planets as follows. Note that signs must be counted anti-clockwise. For example when counting from Cancer, a forward square is in Libra while a backward square is in Aries.

Saturn:
Forward sextile (3rd sign from its sign)
Backward square (10th sign form its sign)

Jupiter:
Both trines (5th and 9th from its sign)

Mars:
Forward square (4th sign from its sign)
Backward quincunx (8th sign from its sign)

Sun, moon, Venus and Mercury only cast conjunctions and oppositions.Nodes do not cast aspects as they are not planets but only mathematical points. However, node points in the natal chart can receive aspects from transiting planets.

Then if this idea is applied to western astrology, it means that a forward sextile from transting saturn to a natal planet/point is stronger than say a forward sextile from transiting Jupiter to same.

Vedic Astrology Basics and Comparison with Western Astrology

1. The Difference Between the Two Zodiacs

Firstly, our galaxy (Milky way comprising of our sun, moon, 9 main planets and asteroids/centaurs interspersed between them) is not static in comparison to the larger universe in its backdrop. The position of the milky way is slipping/moving in relation to the universe. This is called Precession in astronomy.Secondly, the wheel that we call the Zodiac comprising of 12 segments (signs) is an ' imaginary slicing ' of the visual sky done by us on/from earth. So when we put the above two factors together it is clear that the sky that we slice up today (the western or tropical zodiac) is not same as the sky that was sliced up by our ancestors thousands of years ago; during the Vedic astrology era (the Vedic or Sidereal Zodiac). Distant stars that were in the 'universe background' of the tropical/western zodiac now are not the same as the distant stars that were in the background of the Vedic/Sidereal zodiac then.It is because our visual sky has precessed or slipped away a bit since then and is continuing to slip away. This slipping effect between then and now is measured to be currently around 24 degrees, give or take 2 degrees, by various astronomers.

Vedic astrologers today continue use the ancient zodiac ignoring the above precession effect, because they believe that the ' larger background sky ' determines the zodiac (and therefore affect us via astrology) more than just the ' smaller foreground sky ' of our milky way.But modern astrologers use the exact position of the milky way because they believe that the foreground of the sky (the milky way which is our immediate solar system) has more impact on us via astrology than the distant background sky.

Therefore, it gives rise to a 24degree difference between the two zodiac systems. For example, when a child is born and a Vedic astrologer is asked to cast a natal chart for the child, s/he would look up at the sky and may say that Mars is at 3 Libra and Sun is at 20 Capricorn. But a western astrologer looking at the same sky for the same birth would say that Mars is at 27 Libra and Sun is at 14 Aquarius. Both planets would be 24 degrees ahead in the zodiac as each sign has 30 degrees. The same applies to the ascendant, angles and node positions. A Vedic ascendant at 15 Cancer would be at 9 Leo in a Western chart.

2. The Vedic Zodiac Further Analyzed

As explained before Vedic astrologers consider the ' distant background sky ' to be very significant. Therefore, they analyze that distant sky separately and simultaneously alongside the 12 segmented zodiac. They divide that distant sky into 27 segments called the Nakshatras (meaning asterisms) demarcated by distant star constellations. Each nakshatra spans across 13.33 degrees of the zodiac (i.e 360/27) and each zodiac sign contains 2.25 nakshatras (i.e 30/13.33). They have 27 names from Ashwini starting at 0.00 Sidereal Aries through Revathi ending at 29.59 Sidereal Pisces.

As those distant star constellations do not precess like the nearer milky way, their positions are the same now as thousands of years ago. (But do note that these distant stars move a wee bit too, as the entire universe is in a flux rather than static. However, the movement of these distant star constellations is so small that they can be considered static for Vedic astrology purposes)

Ancient Vedic astrologers were different to today's astrologers as they possessed other talents/superpowers in understanding subjects like astrology. They could see/understand things differently than us.One such ancient astrologer called Brahath Parashar who was also a great spiritual mystic, contributed greatly to Vedic astrology alongside a few others. They defined the characteristics/nature/manifestations of the following and their interplay.

a. The angles and houses in a chart.

b. The 12 Zodiac signs

c. The 27 asterism based nakshatra divisions

d. The 'Nine-main-things-in-the-sky'. (2 luminaries, 5 Planets closest to us, 2 mathematical node points of moon)

e. The ruler of each Nakshatra out of above 9.

f. The manner in which the above 9 things take turns in affecting a human's life through a system called 'Dasha system'.

3. What is the 'Dasha' System

The above 9 main things in our sky govern 3 Nakshatras each (i.e. 9 X 3=27). Also take control of our lives in the following sequence for given periods of time. They cover a total span of 120 years which was supposed to be the optimum span of human longevity. This cycle repeats after every 120 years and continues cyclically through continuous reincarnations of a soul.

1. Mercury - 17 years

2. South Node (Ketu) - 7 years

3. Venus - 20 years

4. Sun - 6 years

5. Moon - 10 years

6. Mars - 7 years

7. North Node (Rahu) - 18 years

8. Jupiter - 16 years

9. Saturn 19 years

The above sequence of planets and each planet's ruling period are two 'fixed factors' given to us by the ancient astrologers who must have had their own logic/vision to back up the theory. That logic was either not explained or not comprehensible to their audience. Therefore, we do not know why the above sequence and ruling periods happen to be so.

There is a rather complex method to find out how much of which planet's period is remaining when a person is born. It is calculated based on the answer to the question 'At what exact position within which Nakshatra was the natal moon at the time of birth?'. Then it is asked which of the 9 planets rule that particular Nakshatra. Then the 'Balance of the Dasha at birth' is calculated. For example if a person's natal moon was at 2.00 degrees sidereal aries, the moon would have travelled 15% of the way across Nakshatra Ashwini. (i.e 2/13.33 = 15%). The Dasha period span of each Nakshatra ruler is taken as the 100% period for the 13.33 degree span. So as Ashwini is ruled by Ketu and Ketu's fixed Dasha span is 7 years, it means the native will have 85% (100%-15%) out of those 7 years remaining as 'Balance of Dasha'. The native would have 5.95 years of 'Ketu Dasha forward' at the time of birth. (i.e. 7 years X 85%). So just before the native's 6th birthday, s/he would be done with the Ketu Dasha and start a Venus Dasha which will run from then onward for 20 years. Just before the 26th birthday the native would start Sun dasha which will be operational for the next 6 years.

That is not all, Dashas also have sub Dashas that are sometimes called 'Bhukthis'. Sub dashas also have the same sequence of the 9 planets in proportion to the main dasha period. Bukthis have further sub divisions and so on, much like 9 smaller cogs fitting into a larger cog and 9 of those fitting into an even larger cog. All within big wheelpowered by planets. The main Dasha and the next Sub-Dasha is said to set the tone for a particular phase of life.

Destiny or Karma determines the Nakshatra that houses the moon at birth and its exact degree position. Therefore, the moon determines the Dasha ruler and the balance period of the Dasha as well. This is why the Natal moon is given relatively higher prominence in Vedic astrology.

As a native goes through these Dashas, life's events unfold based on the strengths or weakness of the natal chart.

4.Assessing a Vedic Natal Chart

A Vedic natal chart is assessed based on a plethora of techniques which are too complex to detail here. But some of the main assessment approaches are as follows.

1. Malefic and Benefic planets for the native

2. The 9th Harmonic Chart (Navamsa chart) which is supposed to show past life Karma

3. Alternative ascendants such as 'Uppapada' ascendant etc.

4. 'Karak' signs and planets (i.e. the 'working' sign and planet) for each aspect/function of life.

5. Exhalted, Debilated or Neutrual sign placements of planets.

6. Friendly or hostile interplay between planets.

7. Aspect interplay between planets (eg. Not all aspects are operational between all planets. For example, Saturn is said to be dormant with trines and the forward square, but extra strong in the backward square)

Soul Mate Markers in Astrological Synastry

What does a strong Soulmate/ Karmic/ Destined synastry chart look like? This is a question looming in the minds of most astrologers researching synastry. When we delve in to various sources of information seeking answers to this question, we often find piece-meal answers centered on one or few aspects across various articles, books or blogs. The astrologer is then faced with the daunting task of sorting them, ranking them based on significance level and then applying them to the set of charts under study. Not easy!

And then of course we have to deal with the dichotomy of western vs vedic astrology camps. Different methods for interpretation and different zodiacs involved!

So what do we do? Argue in fora? Not good! A better way might be to progressively analyse and discuss real life synastry case study charts in depth, from all perspectives and preferably using both western and vedic systems.

For starters, here are the chart details of a man and woman born 4 years apart. They met when they were both around the age of 40.

Note: Sidereal zodiac has been used (i.e. Those of you using western/tropical zodiac, should add 23-24 degrees to all angle/planet positions) The sidereal sign, degree, asterism (Vedic Nakshatra) and its quarter are as below.

Now to the synastry. Common sense tells us that a good partnership or a connection between two people should have the right balance of 'contrasting complementarities' as well as 'synergizing similarities'. The two people should be different enough to be attracted to each other and similar enough to stay with each other. So how do these possibilities show up in soulmate synastry? A big clue is when individual charts mirror each other and synastry aspects reciprocate between each other, be it soft or hard aspects. We are talking double aspects or double whammies!

Using the case data given above, lets first list out all the double whammy aspects sticking to orbs less than 5 degrees as a thumb rule (maybe go upto 8 for luminaries and/or key angles). Wider orbs of more than 8 degrees but less than 11 are marked with an asterik. Please note that vertex and nodes have been referred to as axes or angles at times though not considered to be key angles as in the case of AC-DC and MC-IC.

So, here is the vast list of synastry contacts. ALL of the 70 aspects listed below are double whammies; they work from one chart to the other both ways.

Calling all Aquarius Natal Planet Owners: An Issue that Started Back in January 2014 is Set to Peak in January 2018!

When the upcoming Aquarius season unfolds from 21 January 2018 onward, it is going to be more than ‘just another birthday’ for Aquarius suns.  It will be a significant month even other sun sign natives who have planets in Aquarius.

The 31 January 2018 lunar eclipse strikes opposite 11.37 degrees Aquarius. Do you have any planet in mid Aquarius? If yes, then think back to January/February 2014. Fish out what entered your life (or entered your mind intuitively) at that time, even in a subtle low key manner. That thing is going to receive the spot light for the world to see (or for you to deal with), as it reaches a peak around late January 2018. The reason is that there was a new moon at the same Aquarius degree on the same day (31) in January 2014. That new moon, being a regular new moon without an eclipse, may not have been felt too strongly by you at the time. You may not have got a full handle on what was. But soon it will be laid bare in the open, as the eclipse strikes.

Moon Wobbles can be as Strong as Eclipses

There is a transiting ‘Moon Wobble’ effect coming up on 11th November 2017.  Following criteria constitute a moon wobble effect.

a)      The sun is always in square aspect the nodal axis
b)      The moon is always in a hard aspect to the nodal axis (conjunct, opposite or square)
c)       Therefore the moon will be a new moon, waxing quarter moon, full moon or waning quarter moon, in relation to the sun.
d)       There will be two moon wobbles in a year spaced 6 months apart, at the mid-point between two eclipse seasons.

A moon wobble is a super charged new, quarter or full moon in hard aspect to the nodes. Its effects can be as strong as that of an eclipse if and when it is also aspected by an outer planet simultaneously.
It is well established that hard aspects are significant and that luminaries are significant. But what is often overlooked is the significance of the quarter moon; when the moon squares the sun. A regular quarter moon can in fact be as powerful as a full moon or new moon if it is also hard aspected by  outer planets.

The upcoming wobble on the 11th of November 2017, will be when the moon transits the Leo north node while squaring the Scorpio sun. It will be a ‘waning quarter moon’.

See where these wobbles hit in your chart. If they do hard aspect any of your natal planets, particularly personal planets, know that you may be impacted more than a regular full moon or new moon. If another transiting planet is aspecting the wobble, and serving it with a side, then be doubly alert.

Here are the upcoming moon wobble dates and degrees for the next 5 years.
